Tick Tock: A Game-Inspired Watch Gallery

Designers Omid Majdtaheri and Sara Golzarroshan Create a Unique Space in Yazd, Iran

Tick Tock, a conceptual watch gallery in Yazd, Iran, is a unique design project by Omid Majdtaheri and Sara Golzarroshan. Inspired by the Tetris game, the gallery uses square boxes to create a playful and modern visual effect. This award-winning design offers an immersive experience, blending traditional architecture with innovative design.

The primary concept of Tick Tock draws inspiration from the Tetris game. Unlike the game, where different shapes are put together, the gallery uses square boxes with the same dimensions. A change in their directions, or rotation, alters the function of each box, creating a dynamic and interactive space. This design approach makes the gallery a narrator of a game ceased in time, providing an experience of being in an entertainment place.

Located in Yazd, a city known for its clay block-making factories, the gallery uses abundant, reasonably priced, and modular clay blocks. These neutral-colored blocks are complemented by native plants, creating a visually pleasing and harmonious environment. The gallery's dimensions are 3200 mm in width, 2800 mm in depth, and 2400 mm in height.

The design of Tick Tock is not just about aesthetics; it also serves a functional purpose. Each box in the gallery can be used differently – one for keeping plants, another for exhibiting watches, and so on. This interactive design allows users to change the function of each box, making the space versatile and user-friendly.

Tick Tock is a reflection of the city's architecture and urban plan. The designers aimed to free the citizens from the hustle and bustle of city life by creating a formalistic space derived from Yazd's architecture. The modular design, reminiscent of traditional houses with courtyards, gives users a taste of the past in the modern world.

The project faced challenges in creating a space that separates people from city distractions. By closely examining Yazd's urban plan, the designers adopted a formal approach to its context. This resulted in an environment derived from the traditional architecture of Yazd, providing a respite from the city's bustle.

The Tick Tock Watch Gallery is a testament to the designers' creativity and innovation. The project was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a recognition given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
